Nexium 24HR is indicated in adults to achieve and maintain gastro-protection in the setting of chronic heart failure. The drug is composed of 20 mg of esomeprazole and four isomers, resulting in a half-life of approximately 17 days. The drug is a potent inhibitor of histone deacetylase (HDAC) enzyme, which is involved in the control of cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Esomeprazole works by reducing histone lysine 3 acetaldehyde ( Lys3Ac) and acetaldehyde methyl transferase (ApoT). This effect allows esomeprazole to neutralize the proton pump, leading to the synthesis of lysine 3 acetaldehyde and acetaldehyde, two essential compounds in the treatment of heart failure. - Efficacy: The efficacy of Nexium 24HR is comparable to other clinically indicated proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Esomeprazole is effective in inducing rapid weight loss and maintenance of stable blood pressure and heart rate in patients with heart failure. - Side Effects: Esomeprazole may cause mild gastrointestinal disturbances (such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) and headache. These effects are generally mild and temporary. - Rarely, esomeprazole may cause a severe allergic reaction, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, eructation pulmonary atresia, and exfoliative dermatitis. - Always consult your doctor before starting or changing any medication.
